Breastfeeding on Sesame Street
Tom stumbled across this on YouTube, and we both loved it so much I had to share.
Here is Big Bird learning about breastfeeding. He asks questions, Buffy answers. It’s that simple.
I love that the creators of Sesame Street were creating a culture that promotes breastfeeding success way back in 1977.

It’s a bit sad to see that we’ve actually gone backwards. I can’t imagine seeing this on today’s show. You would get so many complaints they would probably have to make a public apology. Sad.
“You know, that’s nice.”
Well spoken, Big Bird.
That is truly awesome. I wonder if they’d do that today though? They SHOULD, I know that. I think I remember a scene like that in Mister Rogers at some point too? Why the heck did breastfeeding ever turn into something “bad” to teach to kids? Makes no sense! Thanks for sharing!
so sweet!
He he, I posted that same video on my blog 2 years ago, too! Nicky simply loves that video and asks to watch it over and over again. And I love the message it sends and the words Buffy uses. So sweet! I agree with past commenters, it seems like we’ve gone backwards:( Now its un-PC to “expose” kids to knowledge about the biologically normal way to feed infants. Makes no sense at all.
Aww, I love that. :) It is interesting, when I was born in 1977 my mom only knew one other person who had nursed her babies, yet there it is on Sesame Street… now I know lots of people who nurse for at least a little while, but no way could it be shown on TV like that.
What a great blog, I’ve never seen this clip before but it’s fantastic. This was the year before I was born and my mother breastfed me. Reading your blog I can’t believe how some people in the US expect women to cover up when feeding or even not feed in public at all. I live in the UK and people are much more accepting of breastfeeding even if the majority don’t do it.
That is such a lovely moment, no wonder Big Bird was always my favorite!!!
I just tried to watch it. The message I received was: “This video has been removed due to terms of use violation.” I wonder what part of it was so violating — the issue of copyright, the topic of breastfeeding, or something else?
I found it in another place – it should work now :)
Amazing. Love it. I teach people to breast feed and parents always wonder what to say to their other kids. This would be the perfect video to watch! Thanks for sharing!
