Goodnight Moon, It’s Eight O’Clock
Kieran has been “reading” us books lately. It is super cute to hear his version of a story – it’s interesting to find out what stands out to him.
Yesterday Kieran read me “Goodnight Moon,” this is how it went (almost verbatim):
“Great green room, te-we-phone, red b’oon. It’s 8 o’clock. Night night moon. Cow gump moon, 8 o’clock. Good night room. Glady whisper hush. Mushhhhhhhh. Kitty-cat. It’s 8 o’clock, 8 o’clock, 8 o’clock. Night night moon.”
I couldn’t help it, I was snickering the whole time. I tried to get him to do it again on video, but the camera is much too distracting.
In case you’re wondering where the “8 o’clock” comes from, it’s from a rhyme we read in a Mother Goose book:
Wee Willie Winkie runs through town,
Upstairs and downstairs in his nightgown.
Rapping at the windows,
Crying through the lock,
“Are the children all in bed?
For now it’s 8 o’clock.”
What were your favorite retellings of books by your kids?
Also, happy birthday Mom!

That is adorable. My 3yo had the cutest monologue yesterday about how he was going to feed the baby but I couldn’t get to the computer to get it down before I forgot it all :(
He is invited to read to his Tía Tammy anytime his heart desires.
That’s so sweet! Lilly always has me recite goodnight moon (good thing since she wrecked her copy), but here’s a couple cute videos for you:

This is precious!! Sounds like my son’s rendition. :)
Aaaaaaaaw I want him to read ME a book the next time we are together!!!
I’ve always loved listening to my toddlers “read” books. My kids tend to memorize any book, so I especially like to listen to new picture books from the library. It’s always interesting to hear what story they will infer from the pictures before we read the book.
Mandy – we will have to pick up some picture books the next time we are at the library!
Heather – super super cute :)
Recovering Procrastinator – don’t you hate that?! That happens around here often.
By picture books, I just mean non-chapter books. :)
The latest one we’ve been reading is “Caps for Sale,” and Mikko just repeats it the whole way through. “Caps for sale!” he yells. Doesn’t matter which page…until it’s the one with the monkeys! Then, of course, it’s “Monkeys!” Not much of a retelling, I know, but it cracks me up, and I love that he says “caps” as “paps.”
