Happy Un-Anniversary!
Five years ago today, Tom and I went out for the first time. It was an “un-date,” because we agreed in advance that we were only going to be friends. I was six months from a move to New Mexico, and neither one of us wanted to attempt something long distance.
Our un-date* consisted of dinner at Mad Greek (a cozy little restaurant on Mass Street in Lawrence, KS), the movie “Hitch,” and a beer or two at the Jazzhaus (a cozy little bar on Mass).
Tom likes to tease me about that night, because I later admitted to him that when I walked into Mad Greek, I had my friend Rebecca on the phone in case Tom was creepy/smelled funny/had no teeth and I wanted to bail. I like to tease Tom, because during the entire movie he was sitting on about half of his movie theater chair – and it was the half furthest away from me. He was hunched over the chair on the other side of him. It was like he was afraid to brush up against me for fear of catching some incurable disease. I checked for B.O. several times, but I was fresh as a summer breeze.
We had about 2 more un-dates before Tom realized he was hopelessly in love with me. We moved me to New Mexico in August, he moved there in December, and the rest is history.
Tonight he is celebrating his love for me by unveiling my newly redesigned blog. I will celebrate my love for him later by taking my socks off. Oh yeah.
So . . . what do you think? It’s not completely finalized yet – we have some widget work to do in the sidebars and footer, but the important parts are done.
I love it – LURVE it. Love the two sidebars on the right, love the subscribe/follow widget in the header, love the font/colors, love the overall feel of it.
I love my hubby!! Thank you for all of your work.
Tom did everything from scratch – it’s not a pre-made theme. He is now a coding wizard. I should be too, since he’s gabbed gabbed gabbed about html this and css that for weeks now. But most of it has flown way over my head. If you are a coding wizard nerd too, please leave him a comment!
Also, thank you to Heather who photoshopped “Code Name: Mama” into the grass in my favorite picture of Kieran – it is my new header. I especially dig the grass growing up over the letters. So much awesome.

*Tom calls it a non-date, and he always puts forth very vehement, logical arguments for labeling it thusly. I have always called it an un-date in the spirit of Alice in Wonderland, because that is much cooler. The End, I win.

I love it!!! I’ve been dying to see what youdi with it and it’s great! The header is tres cool. Happy dating-versary to you two!
Your life sounds a lot like mine only with a kid. Colby’s been working on my blog redesign all day while I watch Lost.
Happy un-iversary!
And I think the new design looks great. Very sleek and clean. :)
aw, how sweet. happy anniversary, you two! :)
I like it! Looks very nice. Happy Un-anniversary.
Well, after starting to push the new design live, TWO HOURS have flown by while I tweaked things and restored all the widget areas… I still have some work to do, though, something about socks…?!
PS – if anyone sees anything totally out of whack (esp. if you are using Chrome, Opera, Safari or anything on Mac/Linux) let me know in the comments… my testing abilities are limited.
Oh, and if you are using IE7 or lower, yeah, the site has some weird spots… help me out by upgrading to Firefox or IE8 (which is actually pretty easy to design for!)
Well, the stuff on the right has to be scrolled to be seen on my computer, or else the font is too tiny for my crummy eyes (I ctrl+scrolled to adjust it) to comfortably read the replies (looks like 6 point in this field if I scroll it down to all fit–to move it to 10 point, I have to ctrl + twice). I’m on Firefox 3.5.7. Not a big deal, just my very not-technical observations.
On my macbook, I have to make the font really small to keep everything on the screen, or I have to scroll back and forth to see all the stuff on the screen. (Safari it is) and its all sorts of weird on Opera Mini…
Beautiful!! I am jealous, for sure!
Happy Un-Anniversary! I’m glad you like the banner :D Don’t forget making that dandelion for the O. Dionna’s creative idea! It looks great with your page, which is easy on the eyes :)
If I ever spring for Xanga Premium I will sweet talk that son in law of mine into designing it for me!!! It looks great and I love the header with the grass around the name…SO cute!!
I must admit I chuckled at your description of your first date…I can just see Tom…avoiding you so that you didn’t have the slightest reason to think this was a real DATE!!! lol
Happy Un Anniversary you two….I love you!!!
Thanks all!
That is such a fantastic story. I LURVED it!
Erik and I had similar ideas when we first got together… nothing serious, just fun. We met him on the first day of college, for Pete’s sake. I hadn’t even completely parted with the high school boyfriend in boot camp, and had come to college with a plan to have fun and date with v. few serious relationships. He didn’t even think we’d last past that Christmas. Somewhere along the way, we just didn’t get tired enough of each other and the rest is history.
Looks great! And such a sweet photo!
Love is a great thing. That photo is just too cute.
Welcome to SITS!
LOVE the new design!
I was totally gonna whip him if he got out of control!
And the only thing I don’t like about the new layout is that on the BB Opera Mini Browser, I have to scroll through the widgets to get the content. Makes mobile browsing a pain in the …
I will take that on as my next major challenge – creating a prettified version for mobile users – there are surprisingly MANY visits from a 300px-wide screen size (are they all YOU?!)
Odd that the sidebars show up first… it should be header, content, sidebars, footer (that’s how the code is ordered to display)
Anyway.
Regarding your Safari/OSX issues – good GAWD the site looks odd in OSX, both Safari and FF… I went to browserlab.adobe.com and checked out the site – the search box in the header area was weird looking (Search button was on the next line down)
I don’t know how many of those osx-related bugs I’ll be able to fix.
