Dr. Larry Cohen is offering our readers a giveaway of a copy of the #1 parenting book, Playful Parenting
Play is the root of all development throughout childhood. From birth, children use different forms of play to communicate, experiment, and learn. Along with fostering growth, play can repair. A child who is feeling isolated or powerless will benefit greatly from the healing power of play. This empowering and connecting with children, however, will only happen on their terms; you must literally “get on the floor”.
Playful Parenting is my personal favorite parenting book. Dr. Cohen focuses on establishing trusting connections between parents and children, rethinking the way we discipline, and empowering and believing in our children. But even better than the lessons in a positive parenting philosophy, he offers concrete examples of how to implement play in your every day parenting. Dr. Cohen explains why and how parents playing with children can not only promote closeness and confidence, but it can ease discipline challenges and sibling rivalry.
Playful Parenting covers a host of common challenges: how to playfully deal with a child’s violent imaginative play; how to help children who are having problems connecting with both parents and peers; empowering your child; learning to roughhouse; following the child’s lead; rethinking discipline; sibling rivalry; and more.
Lawrence J. Cohen, Ph.D., the author of Playful Parenting, is a licensed psychologist specializing in children’s play and play therapy. In addition to his private therapy practice, he is also a speaker and consultant to public and independent schools, and a teacher of parenting classes and classes for daycare teachers. Dr. Cohen is also the co-author, with Michael Thompson and Catherine O’Neill Grace, of Best Friends, Worst Enemies: Understanding the Social Needs of Children, and Mom, They’re Teasing Me: Helping Children Solve Social Problems. His regular column in Nick Jr. Magazine was the winner of the 2003 Golden Lamp award from Education Press, and he also answers parents’ questions online at NickJr.com.1
Dr. Cohen offers individualized consultations, parent workshops, and play days for parents. He also offers a host of services for schools, as well as private therapy for adults, children, couples, and families – whether in his Massachusetts office, in your own home, or by telephone. You can find out more about Dr. Cohen and his work at his website: www.PlayfulParenting.com.

Great article on LISTENING! Very true that few of us actually listen whole heartedly. I have a circle of women I meet with that uses a talking stick. Our undivided attention is given to the woman with the talking stick and we’re not allowed to talk back until she are completely finished and ready to accept feedback if she gives permission for feedback at all. It really helps us to focus on that person and open up the way she needs us to. As a speaker it helps me to focus on what I really need to be talking about and dive deeper into something more healing and honest. I do believe this would be a good tool to use and apply to listening anywhere and anytime, without a “talking stick.”
