Creating a Home

The theme for the September Families, Create! blog carnival was “Friends and Family,” something that has been on our family’s mind a lot lately as we prepare for baby #2 as well as visits from many friends. In true super-nesting spirit, I embarked on a project: strip wallpaper from our two spare bedrooms and paint.

That project expanded into stripping wallpaper (and scrubbing and doing plaster repair and caulking and painting) three rooms (plus a hallway), and then we decided to paint the living room, simply because it looked so shabby next to all of the new paint. We’ve also replaced our dining room table and dinnerware set in the past week – two things that have sorely needed replacing for a long, long time.

And in the midst of preparing for out of town company, I’ve also been scrubbing bathrooms, caulking bathtubs, putting up new vinyl shower curtains (there are only so many times you can scrub the old ones before you throw up your hands in despair. Or disgust.), having a garage sale to clear clutter, decluttering, and and and. Tom has been charged with replacing electrical outlets, light switches, and vent covers (nice and white to match the trim, ya know), moving furniture, making multiple trips to the hardware store, etc. You get the picture.

I am a nesting, super-stressed out fool.

I have not gotten pictures of all our remodeling handiwork yet, but I do want to share my favorite room with you today: the dining room. This room is appropriate for the Families, Create! carnival, because every member of our family helped with the remodel. All three of us helped strip wallpaper, paint, and clean.1 It was definitely a team effort.

Here is the dining room before we attacked it:

Dining Room Untouched 01

Notice the puke green flocked wallpaper and the nasty old ceiling fan. Yes, I know, flocked wallpaper is uber retro and cool, but this particular wallpaper was a ghastly shade of green and tended to shed. Gross. The green in combination with the amber globes on the ceiling fan created a sickly pallor in every picture taken in this room. Our original plan was to find new globes and paint the fan, but we found a great ceiling fan on clearance at Lowe’s that only cost $10 more than what we would have spent revamping the old one. I chose $10 more and less work.

Here is Kieran painting after we removed the wallpaper:

He loved helping me paint.

And here’s a picture of the finished paint job + new ceiling fan:

Dining Room New

This color makes me smile!

And the dining room table is the finishing touch:

Kieran, my child who does not like change, threatened to not let the table delivery people in our house. “I want our table back! I will not let them bring in that new table!” He’d make a great Gandalf.

Fortunately, he was more fascinated with the delivery process than he was with keeping them out, so he let them pass. Now he doesn’t remember what all the fuss was about.

So what did your family create this month? Look for a full list of link-ups from our participants in the next few days, and be sure to join us for the October Families, Create! carnival, when our theme will be “Phizzwhizzers.”

Our theme for September’s Families, Create! Make and Play Carnival was friends and family. Our participants shared with us different ways in which they honored friends and family with their creativity. Check out what Families Create! participants created this month:
Amy at Anktangle made some new threads for her son Daniel’s little “friend.”
Alicia at I Found My Feet helped her son create his very own scrapbook filled with the people in his life that love him dearly.
Mandy at Living Peacefully with Children honors the memory of a favorite uncle with an ornament for the holidays.
Brenna at Almost All The Truth shares what she learned when she unplugged with her family on a trip to enjoy togetherness and tradition.
Dionna at Code Name: Mama loves to welcome friends and family into her home, and she’s even more excited now that her family has created a new and improved living space – check out one of the many home improvement projects going on at Dionna’s house!
Please join us for October’s Families Create! Make and Play challenge. This month’s theme is Phizzwizzers!

This looks fantastic! I can’t wait to see the rest of the house (both pictorially and when I come visit)!

Awesome! Your nesting is cracking me up, because you are ME, four-ish months ago. All my ambition to finish all the home improvement projects I’ve started has drained out, so take advantage while you can…but, also, you know, sleep and stuff.

Looks awesome! You are a girl after my own heart. I always bite off more than I can chew and get stressed out, but the “after” moment of satisfaction makes it all worth it!
