Sunday Surf: January Edition
From the Volunteers at Natural Parents Network
I *love* this artwork from Mandy of Living Peacefully with Children!
Great ideas at Natural Parents Network on Enjoying Your Kids in the Kitchen (written by Melissa of Vibrant Wanderings).
Elena at Wise Way Tribe makes an announcement: “I Quit!” How do you honor your own feelings in the midst of whining?
Lauren at Hobo Mama wrote an incredible piece on Talking About Race with (White) Kids. Contrary to how many of us were taught in the 80′s, we can’t just ignore race and pretend that “we’re all the same.” There are obvious differences, and we need to discuss them with kids so that they learn that differences are good. Lauren offers several great ways to help introduce the subject of race with children.
Luschka at Diary of a First Child has an apt analogy for homebirths. In I’m Not Trying for a Homebirth, I’m Having One, she says, “no athlete prepares for a race saying she’s going to try to compete. She either is, or she isn’t – unforeseen circumstances aside.” How did you prepare for your homebirth?
Melissa of White Noise has opened up an Etsy shop to sell some of her sweet crocheted items. Introducing Wild Arbutus – check it out!
I’ve written before about my love for reusable menstrual cups, pads, and family cloth, so I really appreciated this post at Natural Parents Network entitled Making the Switch to Reusable Menstrual Products (written by Lauren of Hobo Mama). She goes over the variety of options we have available, the pros and cons of each, and provides links to some of the different brands available. A must read for every woman who has not yet made the switch!
Around the Blogosphere

Zoie from Touchstone Z wrote one of my favorite Carnival of Natural Parenting posts – Nope Nada Ixnay Negative Pass Decline. Our writers’ job for the January Carnival was to try something new to them in the natural family living or natural parenting world. Zoie chose to start saying “yes” more to her family instead of “no.” I love the way she explains how she did this – not by compromising herself, her values, or her family’s safety – but by being open and doing so in a way that respected everyone’s boundaries.
Be sure to join us for the February Carnival of Natural Parenting, when our topic will be Respectful Interactions with Other Parents. Submission deadline: February 7. Carnival posting: February 14.
At LoveLiveGrow, Issa offers us a provocative title: Parenting Isn’t Hard. I appreciate the post (which talks about how we would be horrified to see someone treat their partner the way we sometimes see parents treat their children), and I was really impressed by the discussion in the comments.
I’m loving Annie’s Carnival of Toddlers over on PhD in Parenting. She’s featured articles and resources on discipline, food, breastfeeding, and many guest posts on various topics.
If you are ready for a tear-jerker, head on over to The Gypsy Mama and read And Then After 18 Years I Rediscovered My Mom. Thank you to Jennifer at Hybrid Rasta Mama for pointing out this lovely post.
My Current Giveaways

I would love to win this to give to a friend. She is anticipating trying to have another baby soon and I know she had a rough time nursing her first in the beginning. It would mean so much to me to give her something like this that she can have well in advance and ease her foray back into nursing.
Thanks Dionna. I was so nervous about posting that homebirth post, but it’s had a fantastic reception, so I’m happy I did!
thanks for posting the home birth link. i had a home birth for baby #1 and plan to for every babe hereafter!
Lots of great links! Off to check out Lauren’s post. Reusable menstrual products have been on my mind.
Thanks so much for sharing my links! I can see I have a lot of great reading ahead of me. I love the newsy way you write your Surf. :)
Thank you so much for including my post in your list. I love the challenge of writing for CarNatPar. I learn a lot from the others participants every month. I agree, Hobo Mama’s post just blew me away this month. And I’m excited to find Wise Way Tribe. I always enjoy a newtome blog to explore.
