What I’ve Learned as a Big Brother

I asked Kieran if he would like to guest post on Code Name: Mama about what he’s learned so far as a big brother.
The following are Kieran’s own words, unprompted by me.
I’ve learned as a big brother . . .
- To touch my baby gently.
- When Ailia was a newborn, she screamed in the car all the time. It was too loud for me to hear anything. It was too loud for my ears. I sang Twinkle Twinkle and You Are My Sunshine, sometimes it made Ailia calm down.
- It’s fun to hug and kiss my baby.
- I like holding my little sister.
- I like reading to her. When I read to Ailia, I want to read that soft friends book, because I’m really good at that.
- It’s frustrating that I can’t nurse, because when Ailia is nursing or sick, I can’t.
- When she gets upset I talk to her and tell her it’s ok. But my brain tells me that she just keeps crying. And then my brain is thinking “Kieran is going to give Ailia to mama, so I’m going to tell him to read a book to her before he gives her to mama.” And that’s how my brain tricks me.
- Sometimes mama has to stop playing to nurse Ailia. Sometimes I am ok with that, sometimes I feel upset and kind of sad.
- I love Ailia!

I love this. What have your little ones learned lately? You might be surprised at their responses!

Beautiful thoughts! Thanks for sharing! I heard someone say that other day that “the older one always adapts”, but it seems they do more than just adapt- they grow!
oh my too precious! You’ve inspired me to do an interview like this with my little boy (he’ll be 5 in 2 months, his baby sister is 20 mos now).
Your Kieran has such a sweet loving heart. Thanks for sharing his list!
Wow! What a cool idea for a post and what a sweet boy you have there. I can’t wait to meet Ailia!
This is adorable, its amazing how evident his love for Ailia is, even through his frustration at her crying and him not being able to nurse, beautiful.
Love this! I really want to ask my big guy the same thing to see what he comes up with.
Oh my, I love that he calls her his baby! You have a very sweet boy and it seems they have a loving relaltionship.
Love this!!
What a splendid idea! I might have to borrow this, too. Kieran is very wise, and a fabulous big brother.
