About the AllClear Mosquito Mister Lantern
Ok, I’ll admit – I thought long and hard before doing this review. Terminix? The one that makes all of those chemicals? Would this be considered a sell-out? I was reluctant. Honestly, I figured that they’d have some kind of scary chemicals hidden in their “natural” solution, so I researched the product. This is what I learned:
The active ingredients are Geraniol and Citric Acid. They make up less than 1% of the misting solution.
Geraniol: According to the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database, “Geraniol is a naturally occurring scent ingredient found in various essential oils such as rose oil and citronella oil.” Wikipedia adds that Geraniol also occurs in geranium oil, lemon oil, and other essential oils. Used as a fragrance, it has been known to cause allergic reactions in some people. It has a rating of 5 (Limited – Moderate Hazard), but there is little or no research on it, according to the database. I would, however, consider these essential oils safe for use on and around my family, so I was comfortable with this ingredient.
Citric Acid: The Skin Deep Cosmetics Database says “Citric acid is an alpha hydroxy acid used in personal care products to adjust the acidity or promote skin peeling and re-growth in the case of anti-aging products. Citric acid is naturally found in citric fruits and juices, providing the characteristic acidic taste.” It has a rating of 2 (Good).
The remaining ingredients are Water, Glyceryl Monooctanoate, and Nitrogen. Water and nitrogen do not concern me, but what is Glyceryl Monooctanoate? According to my research, Glyceryl Monooctanoate is also known as Octanoic or Caprylic Acid. Caprylic acid “is found naturally in the milk of various mammals, and it is a minor constituent of coconut oil and palm kernel oil. It is an oily liquid that is minimally soluble in water with a slightly unpleasant rancid-like smell and taste.” The Skin Deep Cosmetics Database gives it a rating of 0 (safe!). I feel comfortable with this ingredient as well.
Now that I know it’s safe, would I really want to endorse a product from Terminix? Well, not particularly. However – in my opinion, it’s a good thing that a large, mainstream company is creating products that are safe for our families. I want to encourage companies to make more natural products that are Earth-friendly. And so I agreed to do this review.
The Terminix ALLCLEAR Mosquito Mister Lantern and Naturals Refill works by spraying a mist of the solution from the top of the lantern. You can set the mist for low, medium, or high (depending on how mosquito-ridden your area is). The mist droplets are substantial enough to feel if you’re close to the lantern – make sure that it is not near your food (or that the wind will not blow it toward your food).
The lantern comes with a remote control. The remote is tricky enough that your four year old won’t easily figure it out and waste all of your solution. There is a setting to make the lantern spray at regular intervals. The lantern will beep to let you know it’s about to spray (presumably so you can clear out of the way of the mist).
Yes, the lantern is handy. Would I spend $80 on it? No. I’d be more inclined to spend the money on some essential oils to create my own spray. Or I’d just use my Bug Stopper from the Natural Newborn.
But like I said – I’m impressed that Terminix is giving a natural product a chance. I hope that they continue to market products that are better for the environment and for our children.

We are building a new house and will have a covered patio that I would love to use this with. I get bit so much every summer by bugs that it is a struggle to want to go outside with my kiddie. This would go a long way in making it easier to bear as I don’t like to put a lot of chemicals on me or my daughter. Sounds like a great product to try.
I would use this in the back yard by the hammock.
