learning through play

This review is part of Natural Parents Network’s Learning through Play Giveaway!

“Play is . . . the way that children make the world their own, exploring, making sense of all their new experiences, and recovering from life’s upsets.” {Larry Cohen, Playful Parenting} It is also well-established that children learn through play, which is why we’ve gathered some creative and fun products and websites to share with you and your children.

The Learning through Play Giveaway features nine amazing products for kids of all different ages and interests. I’m featuring one of those companies in my review below. When you get done reading my review, please click on over to the full Learning through Play giveaway post (live on March 1), where you’ll find information on all of the goodies you can win. In total, we’re giving away products worth $738!

Even if you don’t win one of our fabulous prize packages, please consider spending part of your educational budget at one of these small businesses. By supporting small businesses and independent authors, you are helping families, boosting local economies, and supporting ethical practices of manufacturing, production and selling.

Without further ado, here is my review – thank you for reading and entering! (Check back here on March 1 when our Rafflecopter widget will be live and ready for entries.)

About DreamBox Learning

DreamBox Learning offers families (and schools) an adaptive learning technology that teaches kids a variety of math skills through fun and challenging games and stories. Their technology features continuous embedded assessment, and it is the only adaptive learning platform “that has the power to deliver millions of different learning paths, each one tailored to a student’s specific learning needs and level of comprehension. The result is an effective, engaging, and highly individualized learning environment for every student.1

How DreamBox Works

DreamBox Learning believes that “Children persist in learning when they are engaged, challenged and having fun.” More importantly, DreamBox believes that students are more driven when they are involved in the teaching process.

And DreamBox achieves this with its “virtual math tutor” and over 1,300 individualized lessons. Every student that uses DreamBox will have a deeply personalized experience that caters to their abilities. Content, pace, and sequence are all individualized.

DreamBox is designed for pre-K through 5th grade students, regardless of whether they are primarily learning math at home or in school. When they first start DreamBox, they are placed at lessons below their current grade level until DreamBox can assess where they are. Students are continuously assessed within lessons, through use of virtual manipulatives, and through Unit Pre-tests. The technology looks at how long it takes students to answer questions, the mistakes they make, and many other factors to select just the right lessons to challenge them and strengthen their skills.

DreamBox teaches through stories and games. Children in Kindergarten through 2nd grades learn in the Primary Environment. In Primary, children “complete lessons in the Adventure Park with the help of Stella, as they work through the four themed stories (Pirates, Pixies, Dinosaurs, and Pet Friends). No matter which story they choose to explore, they will receive the next best lesson based on previous lessons answered, even if they switch themes in mid-story.”

Throughout the lessons, children earn tokens that they can spend in the Carnival – a complementary learning environment where children play games while practicing math skills. They can also discover Adventure Friends by earning Backpacks, rewards that are offered after children complete a certain number of levels.

3rd – 5th grade students move to the Intermediate Environment once they’ve started fractions. Intermediate students select one of eight lessons designed for them based on their skill level. They also earn coins they can use “to purchase Icons, Music and Wallpaper, personalizing their work space. They also earn badges and can even unlock new math mini-games.”

Parent Interaction

DreamBox is committed to keeping parents involved in the learning process. Parents receive updates through both a Dashboard parents can log into, as well as through regular email notifications. “The Parent Dashboard allows you to see the progress, view reporting, and track how well the student is working in DreamBox.” Parents also receive email notifications that detail their student’s progress – what lessons the student has completed, what skills the student is learning, and ideas on how to further their learning at home.

Our Experience with DreamBox

Kieran has always loved numbers and math. He’s also been very motivated by games – especially electronic games. I’ve been on the hunt for math games online that are designed for Kieran’s growing skills and are actually teaching him something. DreamBox has provided us with more than I’d ever hoped for!

Not only has he gained completely new skills through DreamBox’s games, but he loves playing. Through the interactive and fun movies and games, Kieran has been empowered to master math concepts that he’d never worked with before, and he’s gained even more confidence in math.

I asked Kieran to tell us a little bit about what he likes about DreamBox. He had a lot to say:

One fun game is when I do math jumps on the number line. You start on any number, and you make a jump to another number, and you land on the answer. I like doing the human calculator. It makes you concentrate, you really have to think about stuff.

Before I do an adventure, they show me a little movie. It shows me what I’m going to do, and it’s really cool. It could be with fairies, animals, dinosaurs, or pirates. Each of them have really fun things. Pirates right now is my favorite, because they’re searching for Thor’s hammer.

The Carnival is great. One of my favorite games is Super Dreamball – it’s like Ski Ball where you throw the ball into targets.

I just like DreamBox!

DreamBox is one of Kieran’s favorite activities – homeschool or not. He’d just as soon play math games as he would build with Legos – and that’s saying something!

One of my favorite features of DreamBox is the Parent Dashboard and the regular email notifications parents receive. I’ve gotten a new email almost every time Kieran has played. The emails tell me what lessons Kieran has completed, what skills he is working on, and what grade level each skill corresponds to. They also give me ideas about games we can play together to build on what he’s doing in DreamBox.

Ailia even loves to hop up and watch Kieran. She’s already started asking to play! I have a feeling we’ll be playing DreamBox for years.

It is with confidence that I recommend DreamBox to any family.

(And in a totally unrelated offer – the Homeschool Buyer’s Co-op is offering up to 67% off of a DreamBox subscription for a limited time. Use this link to get your subscription, and I’ll say thank you thank you for helping me get referral points – I can use them to purchase other homeschool goodies for our family.)
