This review is part of Natural Parents Network’s Learning through Play Giveaway!

“Play is . . . the way that children make the world their own, exploring, making sense of all their new experiences, and recovering from life’s upsets.” {Larry Cohen, Playful Parenting} It is also well-established that children learn through play, which is why we’ve gathered some creative and fun products and websites to share with you and your children.

The Learning through Play Giveaway features nine amazing products for kids of all different ages and interests. I’m featuring one of those companies in my review below. When you get done reading my review, please click on over to the full Learning through Play giveaway post (live on March 1), where you’ll find information on all of the goodies you can win. In total, we’re giving away products worth $738!

Even if you don’t win one of our fabulous prize packages, please consider spending part of your educational budget at one of these small businesses. By supporting small businesses and independent authors, you are helping families, boosting local economies, and supporting ethical practices of manufacturing, production and selling.

Without further ado, here is my review – thank you for reading and entering! (Check back here on March 1 when our Rafflecopter widget will be live and ready for entries.)

About Glee Gum

Glee Gum began after a journey to an economically depressed, chicle-producing community in Northern Guatemala. After learning about the history of gum and how it was made, the founders of Verve (the woman-owned company that owns Glee Gum) created its first Make Your Own Gum kit.

Their “goal was to purchase chicle and support chicle-harvesting, since it is a sustainable practice that benefits both rainforest conservation and the local economy in forest regions.” Verve’s quality candy kits and dedication to environmental and social responsibility has resulted in a forward-thinking business model.

Glee Gum

“Verve’s commitment to environmental and social justice is twofold. First, [they] closely monitor the environmental and social impact of [their] own business practices. And second, [they] create products and curricula that help children think about environmental and social issues in innovative, interesting, and developmentally appropriate ways.”1

Glee Gum is also committed to promoting healthy gum and candy options to families. “Glee Gum is natural chewing gum made without preservatives, artificial flavorings, colorings, or sweeteners (no aspartame). It is also the only gum on the market that contains chicle in its gum base. And using chicle helps sustain the rainforest!”2

Glee Gum is gluten free, kosher, and certified as vegetarian. Glee Gum is the first Fair Trade certified gum in the world. The Make Your Own Chocolate Kit contains Fair Trade cocoa butter and cocoa powder, and the Make Your Own Gummies Kit contains Fair Trade sugar.

Glee Gum products are made with your health and the environment in mind. Whether you are a homeschooling family looking for a fun way to explore different subjects through sweet treats, or whether you are simply looking for a healthy, fun way to spend an afternoon with your kids, I’d highly recommend you check out Glee Gum products. Let’s support companies who are dedicated to making the world a better place!

Glee Gum Gum Kit

Make Your Own Chewing Gum Kit

“Once all chewing gum was made from chicle. That’s the sap of the sapodilla tree, which grows in the rainforest in Central America.” Glee Gum began with a desire to bring chicle-based gum to the world – both to show everyone how delicious natural chewing gum can be, but also to promote a depressed economy and protect the rain forest.

Glee Gum’s Make Your Own Chewing Gum kits contain everything you need to make 30-50 pieces of chewing gum. The kits contain confectioner’s sugar, chewing gum base, corn syrup, and natural cinnamon and cherry flavors.

Glee Gum’s chewing gum can be made on the stove or in a microwave, and adult supervision is recommended. And if you love Glee Gum’s chewing gum, you can also order it premade (in packages or in bulk), or you can order the gum base in refill or larger quantities to make chewing gum again with your family or in a group.

Chocolate Kit

Make Your Own Chocolate Kit

Kids are fascinated to learn that chocolate grows on trees. That is, chocolate comes from cacao beans that grow on cacao trees. Chocolate has a long and rich history. In ancient times, it was known as the drink of the gods. We can understand why!

The Make Your Own Chocolate Kit – together with the sample lesson plan on Glee Gum’s site – relates to many topics, including Mesoamerican history, rainforest ecology, social sciences, geography, and more. The kit contains sugar, cocoa butter, cocoa powder, cocoa powder (alkalized), and dark chocolate (see the website for full allergen information). The chocolate can be made in the microwave or on the stove, and adult supervision is recommended.

Gummies Kit

Make Your Own Gummies Kit

Have you ever eaten candy made out of seaweed? Children and parents can get into the lesson plan that comes with the Make Your Own Gummies Kit – especially if you love sushi! Take this opportunity to learn all about how ocean plants are important to our diet. And then make your own candy using seaweed – an algae that grows in the ocean.

The Make Your Own Gummies Kit contains sugar, corn syrup solids, seaweed, vegetable gums, citric acid, beet color, natural flavors, potassium chloride, and molding starch. The gummies can be made in the microwave or on the stove, and adult supervision is recommended.

Our Experience with Glee Gum

Because we are a homeschooling family, I am always looking for fun, highly interactive ways for us to learn about our world. Glee Gum has given me an entire curriculum’s worth of education! I am offering two separate classes for Kieran and his friends – one eight classes long, the other four classes – that were inspired by Glee Gum’s DIY kits.

Making our chocolate in our co-op class. It was so yummy!

Making our chocolate in our co-op class. It was so yummy!

In one of our homeschool cooperatives, I’ve created a Chocolate class. We are exploring language arts, math, science, history, geography, and ethics, all through the study of chocolate. We’ve had so many fun activities already! For language arts, we talked about what nouns and adjectives are, and we created a fun list of nouns and adjectives as we sampled different chocolates. During a science portion, we created two different chocolate concoctions (chocolate bacon and chocolate hummus), and we talked about how ingredients combine in a recipe to create new flavors and textures. We’ll use chocolate to explore addition, subtraction and fractions, we’ll discuss the history of chocolate and why it is important to choose your chocolate wisely, and we’ll make our own chocolate using Glee Gum’s make your own chocolate kit. (Look for a post later this spring where I’ll showcase all of our lessons so you can recreate this class in your own community!)

In another homeschool cooperative, I’m doing the exact same thing with a Chewing Gum class. There are so many creative ways to study different subjects through chocolate and gum! What’s even better? Glee Gum has created Lesson Plans that you or your child’s teacher can use to incorporate Glee Gum’s Make Your Own candy kits into your studies! Here’s how to use Glee Gum’s pre-made lesson plans: Check out the Make Your Own Chocolate, Make Your Own Gummies, or Make Your Own Chewing Gum pages. Scroll down to the little blue box that has several tabs (Story, Ingredients, Instructions, etc.). Click on the Story, Lesson Plan and More Info tabs. Each tab has information and sample lessons relevant to that candy.

Each of the Make Your Own kits has a different lesson plan, complete with the subjects to be studied, materials necessary, and detailed instructions. You can adapt the lesson plans to your ages and interests. For a much more in-depth unit of study, Glee Gum also offers an Educator’s Guide to Gum. This incredible kit comes with materials to make your own gum, a DVD documentary on the harvest of chicle, a beautiful book on the history of chewing gum, and sample lesson plans with supplemental resources. It contains everything you need to do a full unit study that touches on history, geography, math, science, social studies, and more!

And even if you do not purchase the Educator’s Guide to Gum, you can get a ton of resources on Glee Gum’s page for Educator’s – just click on each of the links around the little Glee Guy’s head. And be sure to keep an eye out for my upcoming posts that will detail the Chocolate and Chewing Gum classes I’m developing for my own homeschool co-op – I’ll share the lesson plans with you later this spring!
