Welcome to the June 2014 Carnival of Natural Parenting: Kids and Animals

This post was written for inclusion in the monthly Carnival of Natural Parenting hosted by Code Name: Mama and Hobo Mama. This month our participants have shared stories and wisdom about kids and pets.

About a month ago, our family adopted our first family rescue dog: Prince Han Solo of the Southern Isles (better known as Hans). His arrival has inspired some creative writing: we introduced Hans to the world with a song we wrote to a familiar tune (“Love is a Rescue Dog“), and here I am today working on some haikus. There’s just something about kids and dogs that makes my inner poet smile.

As always – please share your own haiku in the comments. It doesn’t have to be about your family pet, but for sure use pets as inspiration if you can!

On Toddlers and Dogs

“Get her off of me!!”
She tackles, tugs, pulls, hugs, loves . . .
“No wait; I like it.”

One toddler. One dog.
I’m not sure who to blame now
for all the mess.

Ailia feeding Hans:
“Kibble for you and for me.
Good friends share their food!”

On Teething Puppies

Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch.
What in the world is that noise?
“Stop eating the wall!”

Our Star Wars blanket!
Rascal dog disturbs the force.
(Jedi teething tricks.)

On Going Outside

So much to bark at –
Cats! Kids! Cars! Birds! Butterflies –
I forgot to pee.

Five minutes later . . .

Gotta go right now!
Wait – you’re not coming out too?
Can’t pee without you :(

On Dogs and Boys

Being six is tough.
Puppy hugs make it better.
Furry therapy.

The day’s discovery:
“Hans will eat the food I drop!”
Don’t tell your sister.

What fun haikus! Thanks for sharing :)

  2. Love these! So sweet. And I’m a sucker for haiku :) Here, since I wrote about horses,

    Horses smell so bad,
    But Adora loves them, so
    Let’s go and see them.

Haha, I could have just put this instead of my whole post. Sums up the entire thing.
